Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery at Shenzhen Qianhai Taikang Hospital: procedures, team and how to be assessed
edit_noteBy MedTravel China Editorial Team
Shenzhen Qianhai Taikang Hospital's Department of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery is one of the hospital's first core key disciplines, led by senior specialists transferred from major Class-A tertiary hospitals. This article is built entirely on the department's own official release (published by the hospital on 20 August 2026, authored by the department and reviewed by Prof. Wang Zhiping and Prof. Chen Kailin): what the department treats, the techniques it describes, its surgical volume, its team and how to book.
helpQuestions patients bring to this department
- psychiatryRecurrent chest tightness or chest pain that medication does not control — is further assessment of the heart's vessels needed?
- psychiatryA lung nodule found on a health check — observe it, or treat it with minimally invasive surgery?
- psychiatryCongenital heart disease left untreated since childhood — is minimally invasive treatment still possible in adulthood?
- psychiatryA mediastinal mass — benign or malignant, and can thoracoscopic minimally invasive surgery remove it completely?
- psychiatryValve disease that has reached the point of surgery — besides open-chest surgery, are small-incision or interventional options available?
- psychiatryComplex coronary disease with valve calcification, where neither stenting nor standard bypass is feasible — what then?
About the department
- checkOne of the first core key disciplines the hospital built, led by Prof. Wang Zhiping, former Director of Cardiac Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, and Prof. Chen Kailin, former Director of Thoracic Surgery at Nanshan District People's Hospital.
- checkEight full-time physicians, three of them with senior titles; all hold master's degrees or above; team members come mainly from well-known Class-A tertiary hospitals in China.
- checkSub-specialties: cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery and comprehensive intervention.
- checkLife-support equipment including ECMO, cardiopulmonary bypass machines and intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP) supports high-risk cardiac and major-vessel surgery.
- checkRoutine services cover cardiopulmonary bypass cardiac surgery of all types, thoracoscopic minimally invasive surgery and peripheral vascular interventional treatment.
- checkCumulative surgical volume: 240 operations to date; all cardiac operations were grade IV (the highest complexity level), and difficult or critically ill cases accounted for more than 60%.
When to seek this department (as listed by the hospital)
- checkFrequent chest tightness or chest pain, or recurring, hard-to-control heart problems.
- checkDiagnosed or suspected coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease or congenital heart disease.
- checkPulmonary nodules, lung cancer, mediastinal masses or oesophageal disease that need minimally invasive assessment.
- checkGreat saphenous vein varicosity, thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm, or peripheral arterial/venous stenosis or thrombosis.
- checkDifficult cardiothoracic and vascular cases requiring thoracoscopic, interventional or hybrid procedures.
- checkComplex heart, lung and vascular disease needing multidisciplinary (MDT) assessment.
Procedures described in the official release
Coronary endarterectomy
●Patients with diffuse coronary disease: severe calcification along the whole vessel, a rigid vessel wall, or diffuse luminal narrowing with no suitable site for a graft — where stenting or standard interventional treatment is not possible.
●For diffuse disease that standard bypass cannot handle, the calcified intima and atherosclerotic plaque are peeled away under direct vision, combined with coronary artery bypass grafting in the same operation to achieve complete revascularisation. Graft sites are chosen flexibly according to intra-operative findings and the patient's ventricular function and target-vessel condition.
Complex coronary bypass (with ventricular aneurysm or valve disease)
●Patients with coronary disease plus a left ventricular aneurysm that needs resection, or plus moderate-to-severe valve disease needing treatment in the same operation, as well as total arterial grafting and bypass in elderly patients.
●Bypass is combined with aneurysm resection and left ventricular reconstruction, or with valve replacement/repair, avoiding the repeated trauma of staged operations. The internal mammary artery is the first choice for the left anterior descending graft, combined with saphenous vein or radial artery grafts for complete revascularisation. For patients with poor ventricular function, individualised intra-operative protection strategies (such as pre-emptive IABP) are used.
Redo valve replacement with aortic annulus enlargement
●Patients whose bioprosthesis has structurally failed after a first replacement, whose mechanical valve has seized (thrombosis), or who have severe prosthesis–patient mismatch (PPM) — typically redo mitral or aortic replacement, or combined double-valve replacement.
●Aortic annulus enlargement rebuilds the aortic valve and mitral curtain structure, addressing the exposure difficulties and small annulus typical of redo surgery. Fine sternal re-entry and adhesion-dissection strategies are used, with pre-operative 3D CT reconstruction to assess heart–sternum adhesions. Enlarging the annulus allows a larger prosthesis and improves post-operative haemodynamics.
Uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)
●Patients with pulmonary nodules, lung cancer, bullae, pneumothorax, palmar hyperhidrosis and similar conditions.
●A single incision of about 3 cm in the chest through which all instruments and the camera are introduced — fewer incisions, and a widely used minimally invasive thoracic approach.
Radiofrequency ablation of the great saphenous vein
●Great saphenous varicosity with leg swelling, pigmentation or skin ulceration, especially elderly patients or those with underlying disease in whom open surgery carries higher risk.
●Puncture only, no open incision, performed under ultrasound guidance, with limited trauma and relatively fast recovery; the thermal injury zone is relatively controllable compared with high ligation and stripping or laser ablation.
Clinical activity since the department opened
- checkComplex valve replacement and repair — including multi-valve disease, redo replacement, atrial thrombus and double annulus enlargement — has been carried out successfully.
- checkCoronary artery bypass grafting and small-incision minimally invasive valve surgery are now routine; endoscopic vessel harvesting is used in bypass surgery, giving smaller incisions and less tissue trauma.
- checkCoronary endarterectomy is established as a routine procedure, providing key technical support for complex bypass.
- checkThe team routinely performs cardiopulmonary bypass cardiac surgery of all types, thoracoscopic cardiac surgery, uniportal thoracoscopic resection of lung and mediastinal masses, minimally invasive surgery for palmar hyperhidrosis, and peripheral vascular interventional treatment.
- checkThe department describes its technical direction as minimally invasive, hybrid and precision-based.
